Shark attack! A giant shark mural here in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District by the artist Shark Toof that was completed during Art Basel 2011. I was fortunate enough to meet him while he was working on this piece. Really cool and down to Earth guy. I first encountered his work in 2010 when I came across a wheatpasted poster that read “Shark Toof ate your baby”. More on Shark Toof here.

Miami’s Wynwood Arts District gets a facelift every year during Art Basel. Murals that have become a familiar fixture during the rest of the year are replaced by a fresh new coat of paint every December. Although I do appreciate all the amazing new work that goes up, I’m glad to see that a number pieces have been untouched like this rendition of Picasso’s Guernica by Ron English. This mural was done a few years back but it still looks like it was painted yesterday. More on Ron English here.

If you’ve been to Wynwood recently, you’ve probably noticed this amazing mural by Retna. It’s pretty hard to miss considering it covers the entire side of a building. This piece was completed just before Art Basel 2011. More on Retna here.

I was happy to come across this crocheted bicycle by artist Olek at the Fountain Art Fair during Art Basel week here in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. I don’t know much about the culture behind yarn-bombing or who started the whole phenomenon except that it’s pretty awesome. Artist Olek started crocheting sculptures circa 2003. I’ve seen photos of crocheted bicycles online in California, New York and abroad, but this is the first time I’ve seen it in person. More on Olek here.

I was surfing through Vimeo today and came across these videos of Art Basel 2011 that focused on the Wynwood area. Thought they were worth sharing. You can also get a better sense of how crazy it gets here in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District during Art Basel weekend. It’s ironic considering that for the rest of the year, the area is a ghost town.
